Meet our Summer Interns: Clarissa Shirley, Summer Education Assistant
Hi! I’m Clarissa Shirley and I’m a Summer Education Assistant at Gulfshore Playhouse!
School
Muhlenberg College, Class of 2022
Background
I studied Directing and English in college and was the the 2022-2023 Marketing and Producing Apprentice at Studio Theatre in Washington DC. I was also a guest director at Jackson Reed High School in Washington DC. I am also a trained intimacy director with a specific focus on advocacy work for youth.
What is unique about Gulfshore Playhouse Conservatory programs?
The Conservatory staff is a key component to summer programming running successfully. They are all absolutely amazing educators that respect the autonomy of our young actors. It’s been a really wonderful experience to observe the staff and learn about their pedagogy.
Has anything surprised you about your internship?
Over the past several weeks, I’ve been digging into the Gulfshore Playhouse Conservatory’s files. There are countless lesson plans and pages of theatre games. Having access to these materials has been incredibly valuable as I grow as an educator!
How will this experience guide the next steps you take in the theatre world?
This experience has taught me so much about classroom management, lesson planning, and how to work on my feet. I have gained so many more skills and “tricks” to use with the high school students I direct!
Why are you looking forward to most working with students on The Little Mermaid JR.?
I’m really excited to support students as they grow and make new discoveries! It’s also really special to watch these students make new friendships as they perform together!
