Let’s learn about the Director of Finding Nemo JR., Gulfshore Playhouse’s own John Perine!

Q & A with John Perine

John, tell us about yourself! When did you first become interested in theatre and why did you pursue a career in theatre education? 

I was introduced to theatre at a very young age, but the first time I remember thinking “I want to do that” was seeing a production of Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day at Nashville Children’s Theatre when I was 8 years old. My parents signed me up for a week-long camp with the company that summer, and I’ve been doing this ever since.

I think that early introduction is what ultimately led to my desire to work in theatre education. I experienced firsthand the effects of having a creative outlet that encouraged an innovative approach to problem solving in my everyday life. I wound up pursuing a BFA and MFA in Theatre for Youth with an emphasis in directing so I could create impactful theatre with and for young people.

Rehearsal for Finding Nemo JR. begins on Monday. As Director, what are you most excited about? 

So many incredibly talented and excited young people came out to audition for this production, so I’m looking forward to getting all of that energy into the same room!

Plus, this music is incredibly catchy, so I’m looking forward to some new tunes to get stuck in my head.

This will be the regional premiere of Finding Nemo JR. What makes this show so special?

Finding Nemo JR. has a beautiful history of transforming the landscape of children’s media. With the original film, we saw an animated feature dive into some complicated themes, and this musical does the same. It’s a treat to get to work on a story that trusts young people to create a complex and thought-provoking world and story. As someone who holds the original film so near and dear to my heart, I’m glad that so many lines and jokes remain intact – so keep an eye and ear out for those!

Some of the students involved in this production will be experiencing the thrill of creating live theatre for the first time. What should they expect?

We’re going to have a lot of fun! Much of my philosophy as a director and educator is based in the neuroscience of play, so I prioritize creating an environment where students can let their inhibitions go and just go for it. Beyond that, students are getting great foundational training in acting, singing, and dancing. Through all of these experiences, students will grow as collaborators and creative thinkers, which will benefit them in the rehearsal room, their school classes, and life. 

In a world where there were no constraints, what shows would you want to produce with students and why?

Oh, I am dying to direct teens in The Lightning Thief… I’m a Percy Jackson/Greek mythology nerd through-and-through! I think working on a production of Freaky Friday would be a fun challenge for students with some interesting character work and AWESOME music. Also, Urinetown would provide some stylistic opportunities that schools may not dive into.

What would you say to a student that is considering becoming part of a production at The Conservatory of Gulfshore Playhouse?
