Summer Programs Shine: Highlights from this Summer’s Conservatory Programs

Our summer student Conservatory programs have been a tremendous success so far, offering young performers unique opportunities to develop their theatrical skills and build lasting friendships. Here’s a look at what our Education team had to say about these transformative experiences:

Willy Wonka JR.

John Perine, Director, Willy Wonka JR.:
“Students involved with Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka Jr. had the opportunity to apply fundamental musical theatre skills in an expedited process to bring a production to life in just under three weeks. The young performers developed skills in reading music, picking up common musical theatre dance steps, and understanding character in order to act truthfully when delivering lines and listening to the scenes occurring around them.”

“I love the rapid pace of the three-week junior production because it heightens the students’ sense of cheering on their cast mates and having each others’ backs (we’d kick off each run through and performance with every student turning to one another and promising, ‘I’ve got your back’). Many students voiced that a highlight of the experience was the friendships they made, which were forged in reviewing lines, music, and choreography whenever they had a free moment.”

Steven Calakos, Director of Education:
“I am incredibly proud of our young students who participated in our Conservatory production of Willy Wonka Jr. Their performances were a testament to their remarkable growth in both their theatrical abilities and social skills. It was inspiring to see how they embraced their roles with confidence and collaborated as a cohesive ensemble, reflecting not only their dedication but also the commitment from our creative team.”

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz Script Development Workshop

John Perine, author of the 30-minute adaptation:
“With this script development workshop, our students got a front-seat view of what considerations a playwright juggles when writing a new or adapted play. Students are gaining skills in forming constructive criticism that allows space for collaboration, which is a skill every artist needs.”

Into the Wild Broadway Bootcamp for students ages 5-7

Chidube Egbo, Seasonal Education Assistant:
“What I enjoyed most was seeing how quickly they all picked up choreography and music. I love the summer because it is a chance to work with students who have never had the opportunity to experience theatre and create good lifelong memories.”

Our summer Conservatory programs continue to be a source of growth, learning, and joy for all involved. We look forward to more to come with our Seussical JR. students throughout the weeks to come!
