The Landscape of Shakespeare
English Language Arts (Grades 9-12)
Length: 6 session, 50 minutes each
Subject: English Language Arts, Theatre
Cluster: Integration of Knowledge and Ideas
Standards:
- LAFS.1112.RL.3.7: Analyze multiple interpretations of a story, drama, or poem (e.g., recorded or live production of a play or recorded novel or poetry),
evaluating how each version interprets the source text. - TH.912.O.1.1: Research and analyze a dramatic text by breaking it down into its basic, structural elements to support development of a directorial concept, characterization, and design.
Objective: The students will be able to analyze multiple interpretations of a story, drama, or poem by performing and evaluating how each version interprets the source text.
Description: Students learn to approach Shakespeare from a theatre angle: breaking down text, working with rhythm, and engaging with language in the particular way that actors learn to make the language come to life for scene work, auditions, and performances. The program includes a 6 session residency in which Gulfshore Playhouse artists work with students on sonnets and ultimately the presentation of scenes.
Tales of the Underworld: Bringing Myths to Life
English Language Arts /Social Studies (Grades 9-12)
Time: 10 sessions, 50 minutes each

Cluster: Production and Distribution of Writing
Standards:
- LAFS.K12.SL.1.1: Prepare for and participate effectively in a range of conversations
and collaborations with diverse partners, building on others’ ideas and expressing their
own clearly and persuasively. - TH.912.F.3.4: Discuss how participation in theatre supports development of life skills
useful in other content areas and organizational structures.
Objective: The students will be able to prepare for and participate effectively in a range of conversations and collaborations with diverse partners by building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly and persuasively through performance.
Description: In this 10-session residency, each class will select a myth to research, present, and perform as an ensemble. Students work in small groups to explore imagery, story, symbol, and character and develop an artistic response to the myth through original writing from different points of view. Finally, they will develop their own version of the myth and use Greek chorus technique to create a final play for their families, friends and/or peers.
Poetry and Performance
English Language Arts (Grades 9-12)
Time: 8 sessions, 50 minutes each
Subject: English Language Arts, Theatre
Cluster: Production and Distribution of Writing
Standards:
- LAFS.K12.W.2.4-6: Produce clear and coherent writing in which the
development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and
audience. - TH.912.O.3.4: Create a performance piece to document a significant issue or
event.
Objective: The student will be able to produce and publish clear and coherent writing by analyzing contemporary American poets, developing imaginative language, and performing for their peers.
Description: This program is an opportunity for students to meet Language Arts standards through studying contemporary poetry, writing poems, and learning to perform their own written and improvised (spoken-word) poetry. The 8-session program concludes with a poetry slam in which students compete for prizes.
The Sum of Us
Mathematics (Grades 9-12)
Time: 10 sessions, 50 minutes each
Subject: Mathematics, Theatre
Cluster: Make Sense Of Problems And Persevere In Solving Them
Standards:
- MAFS.K12.MP.1-Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
- TH.912.F.2.3-Work collaboratively with others to survey the theatre activities in the school, community, and/or region to calculate their impact on the economy.
Objective: The students will be able to make sense of problems and persevere in solving them through participating in group exercises and finding solutions through social interactions.
Description: In this 10-session residency, students will discover that connections among the arts and other disciplines strengthen learning and the ability to transfer knowledge and skills to and from other fields. Included in this program is an introduction to theatre, group trust and safety through problem-solving obstacles, and working as an ensemble.
