The Hungry Caterpillar

Kindergarten Language Arts

Length: 5 days, 50 minutes each

Standards: Language Arts:

  • LA.K.5.2.4: The students will recite short poems, rhymes, songs, and stories with repeated patterns
  • LA.K.1.2.3: The student will recognize and produce words that rhyme.

Objective: The students will be able to perform a staged version of the book “The Hungry Caterpillar” by incorporating new words and objects that they have learned.

Description: Gulfshore Playhouse Education and ThinkTheatre staff will lead a 50-minute lesson for a classroom composed of kindergarten students. This educational theatre workshop focuses directly on language arts standards while incorporating best practices in drama-based pedagogy. By examining The Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle, students will learn new words through activities focused on using new vocabulary words presented in the read-aloud and applying them through song, movement, and mime. Through utilizing theatre skills and drama-based pedagogy, students will gain oral interpretation skills by reading the story out loud, as well as incorporate body language and gestures to stories through tableaus and singing songs.


Money Jump

Grade 1 Mathematics

Length: 5 days, 50 minutes each

Objective: The students will be able to count and recognize different values of money by working together to estimate different prices for various objects while also being the money values.

Description: Gulfshore Playhouse Education and ThinkTheatre staff will lead a 50-minute workshop for a classroom composed of first grade students. This educational theatre workshop focuses directly on money and Florida mathematics standards while incorporating best practices in drama-based pedagogy. By identifying the values of coins and prices, the first grade students will not only understand the prices and multiple value combinations, they will also be able to speak clearly, connect physically, and experiment with fundamental theatre skills. In addition, this lesson will enhance the students’ abilities in public speaking, engagement, creativity, and improvisation.


Weathering the Storms

Grade 2 Science

Length: 5 days, 50 minutes each

Science Standards:

  • Big Idea SC.2.E.7: Earth Systems and Patterns

Theatre Standards:

  • Big Idea TH.2.S: Skills, Techniques, and Processes
  • Big Idea TH.2.F: Innovation, Technology, and the Future

Objective: The students will be able to recognize the different hazards of each Florida storm by acting out certain drills based on the intensity of each storm that has been read off in a public service announcement.

Description: Gulfshore Playhouse Education and ThinkTheatre staff will lead a 50-minute in school workshop each day for a week for a classroom composed of second grade students. This educational theatre workshop focuses directly on natural science standards while incorporating best practices in drama-based pedagogy. By examining different weather patterns and storms, the second grade students will not only identify the different types of weather alerts and prepare for major storms, they will also be able to speak clearly, connect physically, and experiment with fundamental theatre skills. In addition, this lesson will enhance the students’ abilities in public speaking, engagement, creativity, and improvisation.

Grade 3 Language Arts

Length: 5 days, 50 minutes each

Language Arts Standards:

  • LAFS.3.SL.2 Cluster 2: Presentation of Knowledge and Ideas
    LAFS.3.SL.2.4: Report on a topic or text, tell a story, or recount an experience with appropriate facts and relevant, descriptive details, speaking clearly at an understandable pace.

Objective: The students will be able to convey important story plot points through staging tableaus and stage pictures of various well-known fairy tales.

Description: Gulfshore Playhouse Education and ThinkTheatre staff will lead a 50-minute workshop for a classroom of third grade students. This educational theatre workshop focuses directly on Florida language arts standards while incorporating best practices in drama-based pedagogy. Through utilizing theatre skills and drama-based pedagogy, students will gain storytelling techniques by acting out a story using detailed physicality, body language and gestures. Students will identify impactful methods of both physical and storytelling through examining a popular children’s book. By physically embodying well-known fairy tales through stage pictures and tableaus, students will examine what good storytelling entails, focusing on creativity, imagination, and innovation.


The Mystery of History

Grade 4 Social Studies

Length: 5 days, 50 minutes each

Social Studies Standards:

  • SS.4.A.1: Historical Inquiry and Analysis
  • SS.4.A.3: Exploration and Settlement

Objective: The students will be able to recognize and portray significant historical figures and events through the dramatization of movement and sound.

Description: Gulfshore Playhouse Education and ThinkTheatre staff will lead five 50-minute workshops for a classroom composed of fourth grade students. This educational theatre workshop focuses directly on Florida social studies standards while incorporating best practices in drama-based pedagogy. By examining historical figures and events through drama, students will not only be able to identify important contributions to their state and the world, they will be able to speak clearly, connect physically, and experiment with fundamental theatre skills. In addition, this lesson will enhance the students’ abilities in public speaking, communication, engagement, collaboration, and critical thinking.


Are You a Good Witch or a Bad Witch?

Grade 5 Mathematics

Length: 5 days, 50 minutes each

Mathematics Standards:

  • MAFS.5.MDL: Measurement and Data
  • Cluster 2: MAFS.5.MD.2: Represent And Interpret Data
  • Cluster 2: MAFS.5.OA.2: Analyze patterns and relationships

Objective: The students will be able to use various theatrical activities pertaining to The Wizard of Oz in order to demonstrate their understanding and solve mathematical problems involving fractions, graphing, perimeter/area and more.

Description: Gulfshore Playhouse Education and ThinkTheatre staff will lead a 50-minute lesson for a classroom composed of fifth grade students. This educational theatre workshop focuses directly on Florida math standards while incorporating best practices in drama-based pedagogy. By examining characters and aspects of the musical The Wizard of Oz, students will use themed props as visual fraction models to interpret various scenarios. Through utilizing theatre skills and drama-based pedagogy, students will learn and examine various equal fractions, while also gaining storytelling techniques by impersonating basic characters from the musicals. Further, the students will identify shapes and perimeter/area, as well as utilizing graphing skills, through various Oz themed activities.
